On May 26, 2018 around 6pm a strong and isolated thunderstorm rolled thought the Deptford area bringing heavy rail, hail and tremendous lightning. At 1829 hours Battalions 93 and 92 were dispatched to the 1500 building of Picard Court in the Austin Development for a building fire. Battalion 9301 (Pfeiffer) responded and was advised of a lightning strike and smoke in the building. Battalion 9301 arrived and found a 3 story condominium complex with obvious damage to the roof and reports of smoke in a third floor residence. Crews from Engine 931 were ordered investigate finding damaged appliances with smoldering wiring. Tower 926 was ordered to take a position on division A behind Engine 931 and ladder the roof to check for fire extension. As crews were investigating, fire was found in a vacant apartment between the floor and ceiling on the first floor on the A division near the D division. Crews opened up the ceiling and the outside siding to extinguish the fire. Crews also found extension to the second floor apartment. The fire was stopped there and crews vented the remaining apartments. As crews were taking up, the Building Inspector for Deptford Township arrived and requested further investigation to all the apartments for electrical issues. The fire is under investigation by the Deptford Fire Marshal’s Office.
