On December 31st at 2311 hours, The Deptford Fire Department, Westville Fire Department, Woolwich Fire Company and assisting EMS agencies were dispatched to the New Jersey Turnpike for a motor vehicle crash with entrapment. Initial reports were a vehicle overturned and a possible tractor trailer involved. Chief 9201 (Thomas) arrived to find a single vehicle rollover crash with no entrapment and the Tractor trailer not involved. Motorist on location advised that the two occupants had climbed out of the overturned vehicle and the driver, who was serious injured, had jumped over the guide rail and fled into the wooded area adjacent to the highway. Crews from Engine 922 (Deptford) and Rescue 738 (Westville) started a search with Thermal Imaging Cameras and located the injured male approximately 300′ in the wooded area lying in a stream. EMT’s from the search crews started to access and prepare to package the subject as the remainder of the crew on the highway prepared a stokes basket and rope hoist hoist system to bring the subject up the steep hill. The subject was removed in a short amount of time and turned over to awaiting EMS agencies. Engine 922 remained on location at the request of the New Jersey State Police to provide resources for their crash investigation.
A job well done by the fire departments working together as a single unit.
