Below is the text from his message:
Attention! community letter from the hearts of Chief William E. Hanstein and the Officers of Deptford Township Police Department:
To our friends and neighbors of Deptford Township,
National and sometimes local media outlets do not always portray law enforcement officers in the most positive light. Media coverage is sometimes negative and hurtful to our profession. However, even with some national pundits swaying arguments toward their agendas, you stand with us.
The men and women of the Deptford Township Police Department serve this community confidently, knowing that you support and assist our efforts. You show this support with cards, notes, social media posts and warm handshakes. You show this support by teaching your children that officers are their friends and are there to help them. You show this support with home baked cookies, holiday dinners for officers who are working, and with hand drawn pictures from your kids.
The trust and support that Deptford Township shows us on a daily basis is the foundation for our duties. Officers not only carry the weight of the badge but the weight of being parents, husbands, wives, coaches and civic leaders. Thanks to the residents of Deptford Township some of these weights are not shouldered alone. We regularly work together with all members of this community to make sure everyone has the same opportunities for a happy and fulfilling life.
These gestures of support and kindness are boundless. They make us proud to serve you from our 1st day until our 30th year. This partnership will continue to grow and strengthen as time passes and events unfold. We may not always be able to stop and say thank you in return, but know that without our friends and neighbors of Deptford Township we wouldn’t enjoy our success in protecting and serving everyone, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation or ideological point of view.
President Dwight Eisenhower said, “This world of ours… must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.” Thank you for your trust and respect.
