On Saturday May 16, 2020, the Deptford Fire Departments Battalion 92 and 93 were dispatched to the 2500 building of Shetland Way (Inverness Apartments) for a report of building fire. Initial reports were that two apartments were on fire and that the alarm room was receiving multiple calls of two elderly residents trapped in a second floor apartment. Squad 921 arrived to find a two story garden style apartment building with heavy fire on the Alpha Division. Deptford Police Department on location were confirming that two elderly residents were trapped in their second floor apartment.
Captain Andre Wilson (9202) arrived and assumed command and was detailing crews to required and necessary fire ground activities.
The crew of Squad 921 split with Lieutenant Ed Bell securing a 24′ ladder and making his way to the Bravo side and threw that ladder and got onto the second Floor Balcony. A Police Lieutenant (Grogan) was speaking to a female occupant and as Lt. Bell got to the door they got her onto the balcony. Lt Bell then entered the apartment which was filled with heavy smoke and high heat with fire now communicating through the front widows, searched the apartment and found the disabled male in his bedroom. The male was unable to walk and Lt. Bell performed a fireman’s drag and got the male from the bedroom through a large amount of debris and to the balcony where he was removed from the apartment. The other part of the crew stretched a 1 3/4 hand line and knocked the bulk of the fire down and made entry into the stairwell and to the second floor.
Once the occupants were on the balcony, and additional crews were arriving, additional ladders were raised and with a group effort the male and female elderly occupants were removed from the balcony and turned over to awaiting BLS and ALS.
The fire was placed under control once the occupants were lowered from the balcony.
Outstanding Job by Deptford Police Lieutenant Dave Grogan and Deptford Fire Department lieutenant Ed Bell on the rescues.
