On Wednesday August 10, 2022 at 1800 hours the Tacoma Boulevard Station staffed Squad 921 to provide our coverage for the township on our assigned night. The crew was briefed as t the situation that was unfolding in East Greenwich Township where they were handing a Hazardous Material Incident with numerous resources. The crew was advised that the chemical, Lubrizol (1389) (Zinc-alkyldthiophosphate) is self venting from a tanker truck. This gas has a nuisance odor that is similar to natural gas odor. This odor is spreading rapidly due to the windy conditions. The crew went over the Emergency Response Guidebook and discussed the courses of action that would need to take place.
Starting at 1815 hours and through out the night, the Deptford Fire Department were dispatched to numerous addresses throughout the township for residents reporting the odor of what they believed was leaking natural gas. Each call was handled professionally and each residence and business was monitored with meters carried by the fire department. Each resident or business owner was advised of the situation and advised to shelter in place.
