On Sunday March 26th, Battalion 3 was dispatched to an address on Good Intent Road to investigate interior fumes. It was reported that the resident of a 2nd floor apartment was reporting a strong odor of natural gas. Squad 921 (duty piece) responded and arrived to find a 2 story restaurant with apartments above. As soon as he crew exited the apparatus, the odor of natural gas was present. Captain Wilson (9202) assumed command and had the alarm room ask for a urgent response from the gas company. The crew immediately went to the second floor and evacuated the three apartments of all occupants. The restaurant was closed at the time. Crews with meters were getting high readings in all three of the apartments. Engine 931 was detailed to back into the driveway and send its crew to assist Squad 921’s crew. Engine 933 was detailed to spot a hydrant at the corner of Good Intent Road and Hampshire Drive. The crew from 921 stretched and charged a hand line and had it in place at the rear door of the restaurant as the a crew member from 931 shut off the gas service to the building at the gas meters. Lock out tag out was employed at this time. A representative from the restaurant arrived and opened up the business. At this time the crews went into service with PPV fan to ventilate the building. The gas company arrived and after his inspection, he found code violations with the natural gas service for the building and secured the entire service. Command summoned the assistance of Deptford PD, Deptford OEM,and Deptford Construction Official. Crews remained on location until the requested services were completed.
